Dave Smith & Jack Broudy: Tennis Myth Busting
0:00:10.8 Jack Broudy: Hi, and welcome to tennis secrets of success in tennis. I'm here, I'm Jack Broudy, and I'm with my good friend and colleague, Dave Smith, and we wanna welcome you to another episode in today's ESO, it's gonna be fun. We were just chatting a little bit saying how we could stretch this in maybe four or five or six episodes, maybe do a whole series on this, but we're gonna start with one, and it's called the myths in tennis, some are older tennis myths and some are newer myths, so we're gonna start with that and Dave, say hi to everybody and
0:00:48.7 Dave Smith: Yeah, we want you to realize that we're here not to necessarily say, This is point like wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. And some of these miss because sometimes we use some phraseology to get a person to feel something that will convey into something else, but we have to be very careful, because Jack and I have discovered through teaching, probably between the two of us, 40 or 50, 6000 players, from the beginner to the top world ranked players, and I work with a very large group, so I can compare my success and my instructional elements that I've gained from many pros... This is not the day Smith or the jack Brodie, or this is the... Actually, I think Newton one said, we stand on the... We can see further because we stand on the shoulders of jobs, and in my opinion, so many people have both contributed positively saying things and sharing their wisdom, as well as Jack and I can both say how many times we've heard somebody say, afraid or a technical side and we're like, that's not what really happens, and if a pro is using a certain phrase theology without context, they can be very detrimental in a person's longevity in terms of reaching their tennis potential, so I'm object to jump in when you share Jack or one of your first MIPS and what you're witty, you feel is...
0:02:16.3 Jack Broudy: Well, we can even chat about things that are half... Its like you were saying a minute ago, and we were just be asking with one in or you mentioned are out of the area. I was like, Well, yeah, that's true. On the back end, I wanna hear it's true, but... Have I ever used it? Yeah, I have. I've had players that were tight and they did it, so it's not like it's not a completely wrong... And maybe you will use it on occasion, but some of these miss... I'll start with one, and I'll even get a video going, but I think one of the myths has killed Women's Tennis, women's serving, I should say we're in a survey, and even Martina Nortel will say very often, how the women's game is so elevated. Why did it... She always ask, Why do they have so much trouble with their sir? She says it all the time. And I think the whole idea of down together, up together, I mean, you watch Martina hingis and even wise niacin, a lot of the women on the tour, I've got a video here, but I did you watch these women on the tour and it's really quite unbelievable.
0:03:27.4 Jack Broudy: Then they have no weight in their legs, they have no thrust from their legs, because when you come up together like this, number one, look at my shoulders, however they are... And great service, you have to have your hip... If you're a writing, your left hip has to be raised, your left shoulder has to be raised, so when you switch, you have the dynamic of that slow shoulder, so the idea of down together up together is an absolute killer. And I wonder what you think about that because I never teach down together in litany the way I was taught down together up together. I did... My tosses would fly behind me, they would fly all over the place, and then I would hurt my arm right here because then... 'cause you have no... Nobody come, nobody. So all you can do now is as hard as you can tell like that, and it hurts your arm, and my tennis serve would hurt... My arm is a 14-year-old than a 15 and 12-year yard. All the way through the juniors really? Is for that, Dave?
0:04:29.9 Dave Smith: Well, I think you're a 100% correct, as you can see, here's the 12-year-old girl up serves on RAF miles an hour at 12 years of age, you can see the cart wheel position, this is the ideal Carbondale shoulder, the low right job, because now she has ability to cart, will forward, keeping or playing the same without over-rotating and facing the new.
0:04:52.8 Jack Broudy: She's got a nice slope in her shoulders.
0:04:55.0 Dave Smith: Why you see it in the little apuesta... See her knee bend. But the idea here is that when I see that, you're absolutely right. So when players are up together and they're parallel to get power and they no longer can go from up and over, they have to rotate and they only can swim around themselves, they cannot get over the top of the ball or have the right swing access and you can see it behind you there very, very clearly. Who is that? That has a union. This is the worst, is Martina hingis. She was such a great player. He Atlanta one play.
0:05:34.3 Jack Broudy: No, she's bending her knees and see she's facing the neck, saying what it all as me, a, she's a great player that she never really had a great charter.
0:05:43.9 Dave Smith: I think that's a very important... We keep the swing path from that position more poorly, not to back scratch, but from the racket up, but the shoulder day on the racer children do on the high left shoulder of the toss hand, and that allows this player to now translate that body over and keep the body sideways and yet get some power and get their body to rotate halfway, or what we call the 45 and your case for... And if you watch all of our players, they get to the 45 in the commanding, change whatever one of the people I call it. And that has to stop. So this last demand chain, which do the arm, shoulder, elbow, wrist and finding the racket can accelerate through, if you don't do that and you face the net, you have to decelerate the racket to retain the integrity of the A. Players will hit flat, and the first thing... Probably, I'll piggyback on what you said. I'll go one who step further up to gear down together or down together. Up together is one thing, but Himmler is a myth, folks, to me...
0:06:53.3 Jack Broudy: And you're a fool if you try to hit on your ringtone teach one year a full because... First of all, flatter does meet dangerous because you make the worst player look better, all they have to do is put their stick on the ball and bump it over and you're all a sudden you're off balance 'cause you're trying to hit too hard and they get it back in the court. No, you're right, I mean, the end...
0:07:19.6 Dave Smith: I have players who go to clubs and they are taught to hit a flat serve with no spin, and I asked my player as I said, Well, next time you go to your prostitute teaching a Topspin forehand, and they, of course say, Well, yeah, our tennis teachers tell us the price big time. I said, Well, why is that? And they go Well, because I hope makes them all drop faster, allows me to hit harder.
0:07:43.5 Jack Broudy: And I'm like, dimethyl, would you not wanna get a spin serve in a lot, to tell you why... I'll tell you why, 'cause people think that you could actually get down on the bayou a... You can't hate.
0:07:56.6 Dave Smith: Right? You do have to be about 90 feet tall to have enough extension to actually hire frozen rope the next... But he went to a tree, even estrangement were very tall, 6-11-ish, still have a ton of spend John a Delta, a wonderful study on ball rotation, first serves at all the pros at 130 miles an hour, and it was very clear that the average tennis ball rotation was that the lowest had 1500 rpms on a first serve hiring was Paris, who had a 2800 rpm, right? Again, that's a myth, folks.
0:08:35.1 Jack Broudy: It's a port to flat, you are going to become the dreaded word of that, what Roger behind you, you see, look at that. So look at that slope and this gift, look at the scope and the shoulders, that means what arm is up and on Ronan up on one hand to watch the back shoulder cut up, just like you see the girl, my left hander and the picture behind me, look at the shoulder tiltrotor. Both contacting it to 45, look at that.
0:09:02.1 Dave Smith: So back to my statement though, if you hit flat, and this goes for vilas and ground strokes folks, if you hit flat, you will become the one word you'll never wanna ever be called a push, you're a deer, because a flat ball hitter has only one recourse to get more consistent. And that's it. Softer hits offer. That's the only record. That's it, it's a... He met... That's one of my myths is that we teach for various... Is we'll talk about today, but the Vols, the slide. For a very specific reason, the service, very specific, 'cause number one, if your emus pin on your first serve, it should be very similar to the spin on your second, it's just more dramatically more volition on your second to give you more error room, just like if we're going to dip a hard forehand over the net, we wanna add more brush to get the ball and drop...
0:09:59.8 Jack Broudy: Now look, here's a wagon conserve, see what hand up on him down, he Norton both hands up together, and she had the best... She still has the best women tennis serve of all time.
0:10:12.7 Dave Smith: Now, I don't know if you have a video of methane Sansone, only 5 foot two or three, has the second faster on tour a few years ago, I don't know, Nina, a beautiful siren was very short and very small.
0:10:29.2 Jack Broudy: And it had a beautiful tennis serve and she was What 56 is doing
0:10:33.1 Dave Smith: That all I stood next to the US Open tennis and
0:10:36.3 Jack Broudy: The he bei me in is really was the best player with the orientation.
0:10:43.5 Dave Smith: The tennis serve double faults to show for it.
0:10:45.4 Jack Broudy: So... Yeah, so let me give you... So I don't like down together, up together, I don't know it. You give me on your turn...
0:10:54.2 Dave Smith: Well, I would say the back foot, if we move away from the surfer a minute, but if you let the back leg swing around, you have to decelerate the rack, so every player you see hitting a hard back end or for... And you will see the back toe do one of three things to drag, tick back or just stay down one of those three before the break step occurs, you will see if you watch the video behind you on the service, the same thing. I mean, if you see her, you'll see on the top to servers, take that right leg back...
0:11:30.7 Jack Broudy: Oh, that's right, that tanith
0:11:33.2 Dave Smith: Right leg back on the right hand to form, so I'll move your shoulders up second or Jack, and let's see if you... I know this is probably not the best serve the world, but they do... Every pro usually has a pretty good Lancelot, see what that back leg does on this aggressive serve here. Who is that by the way?
0:11:54.6 Jack Broudy: Who does that? Does that... I can't remember, I think it's... I'm not sure if it's dementia.
0:12:00.5 Dave Smith: I see in the shoulders are not dealer on, they're not... No, she's trying, but they're not a perpendicular and the arms are both straight up in the air, like hands up, there's a live until there. Now, watch a late kick back and should the right leg should take back right about ego through the Fred gunshot right after contact, that leg should be kicking way back, and you'll see that on every good graphics, but a lot of pros see that the leg... They would see the break stop, so you'll see there that a kick back.
0:12:36.4 Jack Broudy: Now it comes for... I got to saltaire, he took this one for me, this was gonna be a mini... Sorry to look, Meagan, we look at her back foot, the Great... That was my actual... He's got great tennis strokes, everybody, it doesn't matter who you are, everyone that contact wants to be lined up, so swinging that foot around prematurely is ridiculous, problem is, you know what it is, dainik, when you watch on TV, guys like joke, if it's run, Meisner hitting him off the court Joao swing around. The funny thing is it does swing around, but you're right there she is the bait can come around... What, what San behind me. So at first... But then, of course, it'll come. The people don't watch carefully about the... Know it comes around in the Athy, see all they see as they're watching with the naked, either not watching a smeaton and they go, Oh, swing your foot around, it just completely throws the tennis stroke of...
0:13:43.8 Dave Smith: And I feel some pros teaching intentionally bringing that leg through with the stroke and the player is always going to be out in front and pulling the ball to the right and having to decelerate the raced to keep the control of the struggle, ottokar, Roger, or especially when handles
0:14:05.3 Jack Broudy: Comrade, but the ball is long gone, so teaching it is a silly, silly thing to swing that foot around, but I hear pros saying this one, this is a new one, by the way, I hear him saying it all the time, and the other thing, I don't like about it, Dave, as you know, I'm a big guy on hips, I think the core is not in your shoulders, I think you look at a person, you go, Wow, of course, is gonna be a little bit closer to your belly button, so I don't like the idea of swinging the foot around abruptly and early because that makes you... That's the steel lagging the dog, that's the shoulders dominating the stroke. I think if you look at SAN and all the players, I think they fight hard not to do that, but it comes around anyway because of momentum
0:14:52.4 Dave Smith: Will be calling a break step because for our momentum is Terry in us for... We have to have something to push it back to a ready position or back to the center of the court, so you will have that recovery step, but it can not come with the swing or the contact point, it's got to actually stay down or back up even as a couple, your video showed him, so is a statement, and that's even more true because the value lives here, higher Ballou can see the back leg...
0:15:21.8 Jack Broudy: I see, I see it, I see it.
0:15:24.0 Dave Smith: Keep me down. This is almost perfect. Volume technically had.
0:15:28.3 Jack Broudy: That is beautiful. I like that. I need on...
0:15:30.7 Dave Smith: So I apologize for taking one of your miss because I'm just planet biggest Mette stepping through prematurely is one of the biggest tennis myth, and I see it on the valine... I see it on the server, and so I've seen on the Redstone and valleys. Well, even on the SERVE, I will mention names, but one particular CRO always told his players could step through the back foot as they were swinging with the idea that they could get to the net sooner, and the question is, number one, it caused them to over-rotate so they literally... You'll see people water drip, El forward, fastnet and pushing the ermine when you bring the back Leger out, you cannot serve correctly. When you're facing the net with your hips, your shoulders and legs, in this case, either
0:16:22.0 Jack Broudy: That's for... Not to mention the very next ball, you're gonna have to recover...
0:16:27.4 Dave Smith: Yeah, well, and quite frankly, you actually can get to the net sooner because if you actually serve correctly and push off on your left foot and the right-hander, you land in the court on your left foot, you serve now the back leg can come through just like a break up here and you're actually three the closer to the net in the same period of time as if you want to rotate and step forward with the back leg and land on the back leg, you just go see a single... Not one, not one player on tour, College-to tier player, step through the back foot and land on the right foot, if you're litigate all land on the left foot. And so that's a big myth for me is I constantly have to remind myself when I'm serving to not land on that back for... 'cause at my age, I get a little lazy and just turns into a ball throw, and I have to remind myself, No, don't just swing that foot around because it's improper for them and it's not really gonna do me any good that day.
0:17:30.5 Jack Broudy: It... I end up pushing this, so really...
0:17:34.0 Dave Smith: Yeah, so there's another Math, the next mistaking villas flat.
0:17:40.7 Jack Broudy: Now, flat. Now, that myth I've never heard, or I hate that bad. Really.
0:17:47.0 Dave Smith: I hear it all the time at your miles flat. Now, here's the thing, I was on the court, and then coming tennis ball on a flat race, the incident angle is equal to the reflective or the reflective able, so not hitting the ball down a ball coming down to a value, which most males are... If they're rising, they're probably going out, if it's Tommy down on a flat, race is going to reflect on an equal angle, not counting spin, which is a... Inspection, tell you a little more. But the other thing about a flat valley is the what I call the pendulum effect, my alarm is connected to my shoulder, my shoulder doesn't maintain a slice component, my arm will go down, I wanna hit down... It's called reverse pendulum, and if I don't hear you have one of my top players it in the high back in Ballina open rack it, they slight wish I had... After the hit, 'cause you saw her finish her, Raquel still be in this open race, it would not close on top of the ball.
0:18:49.9 Jack Broudy: And so one of the trolls, what you're saying is, if the ball is coming down at my race and my tennis racket flat, it will go into now.
0:18:58.4 Dave Smith: It will always go. How many times have you seen a player a foot off the neck with a ball holyhead High, and they hit it in the bottom of the net seemingly decline every law of physics, but you did not understand that that High Ball... It was coming straight down is going to come down, it's going to reflect down off the race, if they're getting dam this way, They're magnifying the downward angle, they'll hit it in the bottom of the net. And so one of the biggest myths I've seen as players hit top hit Slack, the other thing about a problem with a flat body is If I below the net, I've got an angle of... Now, if I hit a low only flat on an upper trajectory to clear the net, and I hit it with any kind of force, I'm gonna hit it out, you're going out.
0:19:49.6 Jack Broudy: So
0:19:49.8 Dave Smith: I need a mechanism that will slow that all about, and what does that mechanism to name decent. It's called slice it. If I Sizemore absolutely, because the eastern groups are top spin grip again, I'll take it one step further and they'll let you jump on this, but if you're teaching Eastern groups on your volador promoting a flat, if not a top ten Rite Eastern for Eastern back in our top ingrain, the Eastern forehand to Toronto and the myth of pro saying, Oh, well, change their grip later.
0:20:27.3 Jack Broudy: I was thinking... Before you said it, yep, I knew you're rigour thinking, Oh, I just have to switch quickly from Borneo back in...
0:20:34.5 Dave Smith: It never happens. You never said if you wanna stay playing at the 205 level or 300 level for Life, where the balls are coming slow, hell, you can use two hands upside down and do just about anything, you can probably get the tennis ball back if you're a re...
0:20:49.2 Jack Broudy: Remember, the weed is a strong...
0:20:52.1 Dave Smith: I start million of them and those 131 35-inch frame. Yeah, you're basically kind of a NATO, a tennis oratory.
0:21:00.8 Jack Broudy: You're holding part of the tennis fence, but I do...
0:21:04.1 Dave Smith: Here's what I always caution people, if you wanna get better, that's great, but as you get better, who are you gonna be playing to get better person gonna... Players that know how to dip the ball, the top ten... Oh my gosh, or that words Finnigan dipped a blow at your feet, you better be able to get under that ball, which you cannot do with Eastern grips and you be... Learn to slice that balsa, you can hit that.
0:21:27.7 Jack Broudy: I didn't even know that was a myth, I guess I don't go to enough tennis, I'm always grinding or one player at a time on a private court, so often that I don't even know that that's being taught, I had no... That's a horrible minute. Alright, I'll get into one little. That's a little... Gonna be a little more controversial. Race had speed, they've been pumping out rack and head speed for what, about 10 years? Maybe eight, maybe eight to 18 years. And once again, it's kind of like swinging that foot around, they think that you speed up right before you hit the ball, but what they don't realize is that you... It's like the whip. The whip move slowly. Slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly. And only an impact doesn't speed up, and really what the speed of the tennis racket had actually comes... I slow motion. It comes after the hit, and it comes naturally, if you teach a junior to try and swing fast, you're gonna have some crap all the matches, man, 'cause no one's gonna keep the ball and play it, they're just gonna hit the piss out of the ball, what's gonna happen is they're gonna miss him, they're not gonna be fun to play with or to play against because you never know what to expect.
0:22:43.3 Jack Broudy: People don't realize that pace comes from a different way. Yes, it kinda come from rackets, that was Anionic a little bit, but he wasn't known for his ground is better... Is known for his ground, he said, Look how slowly and Elise swayed, so if you coordinate everything right, like rules for inch, death blow, you think it's just coming from this harden, it comes from his core and it ripples out through his body like a whip, or like a wave in the ocean is out and pale and you're dead, and that's a four-inch death blow, but people don't realize you've got your 50-60 pounds, my mind will be 40, but you have your tension in the streams, so think about it, the further... These streams go back into the hit... Well, that's gonna spring, the ball also had a lot of pressure in the ball itself, so if you meet the ball, not only if you use your body correctly, you really ripple out to the hit, but if you meet the ball with that... Perfect it. More than a sweet spot. I say there's a sweet spot in their act, but there's also a sweet spot in the ball, which is why I invented that COBRA because the cob is cured when you learn to hit a round object and treat this like it's a round object instead of a linear object, and that's why I Velar hand back to shape the ball as they say, they say shake the ball.
0:24:14.1 Jack Broudy: I don't know if they really know what they're talking about. But yeah, you lay your hand back because I contact you wanna be like the bump of a wave, right, you wanna be as it goes like this, you wanna be at that bump right there, 'cause that's where the ball needs to strange. So I think that's one of the biggest misnomer and tennis is you want a hit hard swing faster, no, use your body perfectly and meet the ball with the thought of having a round object touch another round object, push more air into the ball, which is highly pressurized to try to squeeze more, and there are push, more bend in the strengths, you combine those two things, that both is a line, so it's not just tennis racket head speed, and I think... I would have to call that a myth personally, I don't know how you feel about it. I think you're right.
0:25:10.6 Dave Smith: I'm gonna add something to that, which I think complements what you're talking about, and that is, I have a couple of phrases that are very self-aphasia that people have to understand. Let me ask you a question before you say the phrase, have you seen an unconventional player have some pretty good shots, which I... Monomers players, they usually do something right in there, or they don't do it exactly, but they're consistent now and eratic serve... You're done. Okay, so my complement to what you just said, I have a phrase called Keep the plane the same. Okay, so when you're a stroke, a tennis ground stroke, if you... I've got video and still pictures of a player he of forehand, let's see if I can get a hand in the picture, and that racket going through doesn't... He doesn't... I don't deal. Does it a lot? It stays in the same plane even long after the stroke is done, even though it wouldn't make it a fact that if my rabbit starts and comes up on the same play, and you can see this girl finishing her stroke on the same plan, the tennis racket still on the same plane, the boar hid crossword.
0:26:23.9 Dave Smith: Now, what does this do? Keep in the play the same means a stroke, and I have another phrase that goes with us, it's called Home your finish, because if you wanna have a consistent stroke, you have to have a starting and a finishing point that can be repeated, and if you keep the plane the same and momentary. And Peter, as the king of pulling this finish, he holds that finished actually on the back, especially on the before and not as dramatic, but in the teaching modality, a player who is taught to keep the plane the same, to feel the brush, to feel the SPED... To feel that wave of inertia going through the ball, keeping the play in the same goes what they get very good at, hitting the same shot to the same target over over... What does that build? It builds confidence. The is when a player... And I don't test I... This cousin of times I'll have a clear hit ten balls and I say just what you get the first two or three, and with nice again, set pole, keep the play in the same set, finish the stroke, the play and say...
0:27:31.7 Dave Smith: Guess what, the last seven or eight shots look like, they naturally hit harder because the first three balls they hit perfectly and they felt the speed of the stroke build from within themselves rather than need... How do we say, create your Ashlee harder because that protein Eric term.
0:27:52.2 Jack Broudy: Let me piggy back on that, 'cause maybe this is something you haven't said, but I always tell my kids and players play on the edge of control, not on the edge of power, so you don't wanna swing as hard as you can and then try to control that you wanna be controlled and then keep and stay on the edge of control and always... He was a little more body angle, your face, a little bit better, do everything a little bit better, and you'll get that natural power, but just by trying to play on the edge of power and out of control, you're gonna just be an erratic player who's gonna have a good win every year or two, and play in the zone, as they say, every twice a onetime instead of... Instead of being like the junior, I can tell you Sam Querrey and STEM, and Stevie Johnson and the juniors, none of those kids had bad days, these pros on that back, they're always in the zone, so the whole... A misconception, there's another myth, you can only be in the zone three times in your life, indicus people say, it's another stupid math because that's just people that are really sloppy and out of control and trying for power...
0:29:07.2 Jack Broudy: Yeah, they'll get a good win every once in a while, and there is... The time will just be annoying to play 'cause nobody gets a rhythm including themselves, and so I like my players to always play on the edge of control and not try to open... In fact, I think if you're a great player, you're always holding back a little... Always holding back a lot.
0:29:25.9 Dave Smith: Well, and I've got a mechanism, and maybe you've not heard this, but I said it, and that is, hold your finish because it's a ROI sometimes use that it... It is the governor that instead of telling the player to back and off or hold back, I just simply say, Hold your finale, show me you can hold your finish for two seconds because they cannot over-hit 'cause they would lose their balance, and if they know they're gonna hold their fine, they're gonna hold in a position that the body stays balanced... I'll go do that. My contras is a keep to play in the same and hold your finish are the two mechanisms that allows this young lady who can serve 115 miles an hour, you only for three and drive it the hardest fricking for... And you'll verse, because she could do these things under a balance, I always tell players, imagine your books on your head...
0:30:17.3 Jack Broudy: I do that, I did that one just yesterday, the
0:30:19.4 Dave Smith: Respected.
0:30:20.9 Jack Broudy: That is a huge one to get them to feel what we call on the golf for keeping the spine angle intact, because if they're starting to tilt their head forward or backward-leaning, they're gonna lose their rotational component and their angel or power, but they're also gonna lose a racket orientation, so I do like holding your finish and I've used it a lot, and I eat it makes you thoughtful and it makes you focus on balance. And whether you know it or not, it makes you focus on balance, but there are exceptions to the rule, remember, we're talking before we started this podcast about how people will say, I'll take the serve on the rise, they'll always use the exception to the rule to try and make it the rule Agamemnon. I can see he set up... You had a very interesting way people are texting and I should have turned off my text, he was very interesting, he'd go into the shot and the intense elbow would break and then he would come right into this... He didn't hold... He was one of the few that didn't. And his back in was like this, and then he would come read it was really kind of beautiful, and it really is the reason I came up in the beginning with the figure eight, because agashe was the figure in...
0:31:34.3 Jack Broudy: Even the way he finished his stroke, he would come right back into the next one and then he'd be in this and then he finished the next drug and come back into this, so he might have been the exception to the rule, but he certainly helped me with God.
0:31:46.3 Dave Smith: I agree, and I'm gonna be... I'm gonna let you in on a secret. You teach to Paris to hold her finish, they will develop a rhythm to... You will see them to develop a rhythm that fit their narrative and their personality, so I'm gonna say that yes, I don't teach AACS forehead because it doesn't meet the criteria of a repeatable, reliable, set a beginner, and remember, these are teaching moments rather than taking a player who's already developed a skill sets, but the idea of a strum pattern that is repeatable, reliable on command, that can be done in every situation, we do a lot of repetitions where that stroke is repeated, repeated, repeated, and to a very specific... Is I see what you're saying, right behind you, you can see even though they're holding, they're finished, after a little while, the Ocoee, the repetition, now there is a more advanced player who's got a little more flow, here's what we get is a beginner player right here.
0:32:55.4 Jack Broudy: Yeah, Celica, tell the aret better players, I can tell just on the way they flow into the next to
0:33:04.0 Dave Smith: It. So you can see this, and this is the real beginning right here, but you can say to us, repeat it, this is another... Not beginner tennis, it's a JV tennis player, but he never made Arecibo. These are players that you can see, I'll tell you a tardis across the board that we... This one right here, she's a better play, she's her number one girl that... She's a better player, I can tell. Because she does, she does what you say. And so you can see the flow has already been developed, every player will do that to say, Oh, you're going to produce clone players, and if you keep them to drop the rocket, hold their finish, you're gonna only produce a bunch of clones or storm troopers West to so whatever you are called. No, you're not... Every personality will evolve the stroke, the advanced stroke to be like this young baby, very loud, very smooth, and they're... So just working on it, a nice insight, a sharp inside out forehand, these girls are working on the Cross for back ends and whatnot, so you see them try to get that rocket, this is our fast hand from...
0:34:04.8 Dave Smith: So we're not giving them time to get set, but that's true, back to the myth of if I'm going to expect a player to create a repeatable stroke of command, I've gotta give them the tools to establish that ability, so whether we add movement here, where we had a little bit of movement. These are my JV kids here too, but you can see that they're moving and getting their body sideways and driving up through that ball the same way every single time. There is a reason why we've never lost a machine five years, you're giving me a year, state champion.
0:34:44.3 Jack Broudy: So you give... I have two other MIS, but you just gave me another one which I'm gonna... To jump at. Well, I think another myth is, so many pros teach this, they say that the stroke starts her... Corinth stroke starts here. No, the stroke starts here, and you connect the two sides to connect the two sides of the stroke, so the scope does not start here, is it a reading position, and this is your morning, a ready position? This is your forehand position because you wanna connect the two sides of your figure in, and so first of all, you time the Bates, it comes in this way, you suck it in, I actually develop your timing coming in and then continues coming up. So I think another horrible it is that... Okay, even get on the back now I point you to the red, it doesn't start their folks... That's a me. Anyway, next minute, I just... You reminded me of that. So I think that's a big deal 'cause I'm watching your girls, they're all starting to stroke in front of them, getting into it, and that's what got... They have developed the mechanics of being what we call Conscious Competence, where they know where they raced to be here, they know where here...
0:36:06.1 Jack Broudy: They know where it needs to be here. They know where it needs to be here. Then it's like a musician playing the piano, I know my fingers need to go, and then now I've mastered that, so now I can flow into... Or PS does not pop. They start to flow once they've learned the scales, I took a few piano lessons and they told me that my rise was as important as my job at the rise was just as important, and I see that in the tennis stroke as well. So you don't start at... You don't start in a linear position back there, so I'll just talk to... I still have a couple more migrant, you'd come up with a... Alright, another one. Player who's gonna win. I hate this one, and it's not really... It's a commentator thing, I'm not gonna say her name, but it's a female commentator, and she always says the same thing when they go into the third set, the player who wins this match is the one who wants it the most, that has got to be the dumbest thing I ever do, you made me one person on tour in a cheap hotel there on the road away from their family, you tell me one of those people that doesn't wanna win it, like it's the last match of their life, not the better player.
0:37:29.7 Jack Broudy: Generally, the one with the pure strokes, the one who doesn't face the net, I love games, I love him, but he faces the net too of it, so he hit the fence a line, especially under big pressure or a... Him or Dustin Brown, they'll get too flat on return, as Siri love Dustin Brown, he's the most fun guy to watch, but They spake the ball, they faced that, they don't pay attention to their opposite hand... We're better joke it, they're on joke of it, she hits that pour in that left hand rushes in every time, kinda like You're garter, and they're pure, that they just hit a Pure at all, so don't tell me, folks, that's a real dumb jock mentality, and I don't like it, 'cause it deters a lot of people that go, well, I don't have that kind of heart. So you get a good game, you'll be a good play, you'll plenty of wins, and no, you don't have to be a jerk, and you don't have to be someone who's insanely has to win to win a match you can win on town. They look at me on board, he was quiet.
0:38:32.6 Jack Broudy: Look at Roger better, he's quiet, you don't have to be like Jimmy Conners running around number one doing this, and you don't have to be likely here it... You can have different personalities, so I really don't like that because I think it actually pushes people out of the game, and I think the better player with the better strokes generally wins the match, not the one who wants it the most. I know that's not a tennis teaching men, it's just a myth that no one's ever talked about that in A... I wanted to throw out...
0:39:04.7 Dave Smith: I agree, and I'll say There's a tennis teaching model out there that I think is somewhat contributing to that, and there's some sort of belief that says, I'm not gonna teach advanced skills 'cause they're too challenging, I wanna just make it fun. Well, folks, fun and when you can hit balls on command and don't have to bunt the ball over to play the game, number one, number two, if you can't make learning skilled strokes fund, you probably should not be teaching, and I'm gonna see that bluntly, because I've seen a lot of drugs who favor the hidden giggle because they're like, Oh, I don't wanna lose my kids. So I just wanna make it a lot of fun for him. And we're not gonna teach him Congolese, we're gonna just teach him how to bunt the ball over the net so they can start to rally and play the game and rally in fun, folks, bunting the ball over then that if you were a rally... If that was true, then give your players a beach ball and they can rally for 30000 times without missing, and I guarantee you will not be funny when you start to trade players to hit the ball with a purpose, controlling it, hitting it for accuracy, for angles for power for spin, for dipping or hiding sharp angle, Vale winter.
0:40:28.6 Dave Smith: Then tennis becomes fun because of the sport, not because you're going out there and telling kids, well, here just hit this little plastic thing and I don't care about your footwork, Don't worry, we'll figure that out later. No, folks, that's...
0:40:43.4 Jack Broudy: I agree, I think I agree. Fun is high level, and if you can... Is very easily achievable. If you can play tennis like a bird flies or a fish swims, you're really having fun. I mean, look, I was just funny, I was gonna mention, God, you know what, most hack offers, you know what they talk about when they have their cocktails at the 19th hole where 90... Well, all they talk about was the one beautiful, perfect shot that, You know, I still remember a shot... Honestly, this is true, I play with a really good player and tin and town certified from... But he's here in Denver. U12. It's a great ball. Why? He plays with the old man, I don't even know, but you made me run two weeks ago, this is still two weeks... Well, he made me run, which I never wanna do, but I do occasionally 'cause I just get pumped up, and he made me run cross court for a Ford and I dig this thing, I mean, I didn't get it a sound actually, I made my ears ring, I'm still thinking about that shot two weeks later, so fun is when you hit a high quality shot or hit a lot of...
0:41:50.5 Jack Broudy: The whole day is high quality, that's real fun, so I just... Yeah, I don't like that bully mentality of, Well, you didn't want it bad enough to coach now, maybe you could have given me a better serve coach and I might have one, instead of a faulting on a big point.
0:42:05.5 Dave Smith: I will say that quality tennis strokes that are fun to have... Does not take a long time to learn. No, I take a long time. This is my daughter. Right offer, phenomenal tennis player started link in bulwarks tactically, and she drives them all for the most manso can drive the ball 295 on pretty much any given day, 285 to 290, and what do you see in the stroke you see a perfect set up, you see the foundation of her body rotation around her spine angle that we talked about earlier, you see her body torque, you see her spinning.
0:42:43.6 Jack Broudy: It looks beat, looks very simple. And she took all this, you take all the clutter out of the stroke, look at the hips, rotating them, stop and let the tennis club had relieved and back lane stays back of hitting them all further, allowing my back leg to swing around would allow me to hit the ball further.
0:43:01.1 Dave Smith: Why does not a single golfer swing with the back leg coming around with the track you want to...
0:43:06.4 Jack Broudy: It's all about balance and quality, and it is...
0:43:10.3 Dave Smith: He's not a big girl. And again, you watched men who swing like they're trying to muscle the ball and they can't get a third of them that this is a early... The repeatable, reliable swing path that she addicted to generate in the world of golf, similar to her task I wish...
0:43:30.5 Jack Broudy: I don't know if I've got a bit... I do have a shot at her when she was a little girl playing tennis, but we do it, it though, high quality tennis strokes will win more of... And this, when I was a kid, nobody wanted to win worse than me, we played guys that were retired than me or better players to me, my will couldn't carry me a eternity just in a better ball. So that whole concept of Who wants it better is a... Let's go to another... 'cause that's not even a teaching thing, that's just so mental...
0:44:08.6 Dave Smith: Well, meta can't learn advanced tennis strokes from early on, this is my eight-year-old daughter and an open stance to hide four hand stroke and taught or two hands on both sides, which ever... There's a whole series of the talk about... A lot about that. But again, this is after two and a half, three months of plane, he could rally with me in a rally with full size racket, yellow, a hitting open stands close to hitting around the outside, the IT, a cross corral, my time was nine, she was hitting with college level players, and he withers again, and she's not that good of an athlete, which I hope she never hears me say this, but I could toss a ball to her and she couldn't catch it in a formation was very suites.
0:44:54.7 Jack Broudy: Another myth, by the way, size is important, it's not artillery, and in Justin handed Schwartzman, there are some phenomenal players, size is not important, kind of ROI. Not a bit for you. I got one, I'll tell you one that really bugs me, and I hear it literally from 90% of the pros out, step forward on your volume in... I see so many people getting jammed and then they step forward, you can't step forward on bodies if the ball's hit to you.
0:45:26.4 Dave Smith: Right, if you go a step back to the other food or you tend get your 45...
0:45:30.3 Jack Broudy: That's exactly right. You watch better, I swear better. After time Valley steps back to line it up and just goes like that, even on the fort, and he just steps back and puts himself in a perfect light up if the boss coming towards me and I step in and I'm going to the bottom, and then that can I have to use a four and grip, I can't use a continent and step in, you've gotta line up the ball, period, so generally the back foot moves first, so you're 100% out, but nobody teaches that. I watch people hit poles right at the person, and these poor club players are trying to step their laying their head back, stepping in.
0:46:07.5 Dave Smith: I think you have to be careful because there are times we stuff across your body to get your body sideways in the bayou, gotta do what you closing in. Keep your body sideways. I don't want her in this situation facing the net, so I've gotta get her left side turned over, but it's definitely in front, but I agree 100% that again, if you teach tennis the slides badly, you can hit that from many... We teach job step crossover, star drop step with the Valley because you need all of them, just like you need an open stance into close dance, neutral can on a four retreat and given rallying a pro, and you will see players step to the side, you'll see a step for to see instead is just staying here, you see, or not stepping. Other than just a little bit.
0:46:55.4 Jack Broudy: So I think the whole idea of just talking about your feet on the tennis volleys, when you should be talking about your line-up.
0:47:01.8 Dave Smith: You're upper, you're up body controls what your feet will do on the volume, my shoulders curb, my right foot will go in front of it my sorter, but I have to leave that my life should turn and back away from me so I can get my alignment correct, that's the... Absolutely, the position has to be not... I would say You cannot isolate or pigeon-hole on this is, why would people say You... You should only teach open stands for him or you should only keep no post and foresee heard it all. And I'm gonna tell you, all I have to do is pull up the video of any pro Matan, I don't show your open standing close distress, I will shoot standpoint. You can go past that and you can talk about grips, you watch Carlos meant he used to use seven different groups of his forehand, all depending on the shot, if it was super high, I would be super western as it got a little... I already went to semi-West and players do that today, there's not one grip that you use for all four hands, I would argue that if you teach an Advanced grip, which would be in my opinion, in Warton, Eastern forehand and somewhere a player...
0:48:13.0 Dave Smith: In fact, I've done this several times, I've had twins, multiple identical sets of twins, taught them all exactly the same way, and ironically, one had a full western four and one had close to a week, somites eraser for Hanrahan one hand and back in, the other one had a two and I back and I taught to be exactly the same, so my argument, if you teach players in backstroke, I teach all teaches, I teach a lot of two. And for him, as I know you do, I know that those strokes will be able to be matriculated to more and maybe a one hand and stroke or whatever, and we teach every player on how to slice them all, we teach every player how to hit around the outside of the ball, getting more spend, we teach every player a life hybrid and kicker Weaver, these advanced drop, no two players will ever play a like... And I've talked through it.
0:49:13.5 Jack Broudy: I think what you're saying so well is that you don't teach tennis style, you teach tennis fundamental, absolutely teach. You teach players a line up the ball, correct, be, let your hips, drive to stroke and your rackets to taillights, the tip of the web, that's the dog's tail. You teach fundamentals and then you let them find their own game where they're comfortable, so I agree with you 100%. Teach fundamentals don't just because you like a two-hander doesn't mean you teach everyone a tender because some players are not gonna be quick enough, some players to get to the... Because, you know on a two-hander... You know, it's 30% short.
0:49:56.6 Dave Smith: I have found were all two-handers backhands could easily go to a one-handed backhand, 'cause we teach one have its life to all of our players, so they're already familiar.
0:50:06.0 Jack Broudy: Not all one-handers can go to a
0:50:07.4 Dave Smith: Treaty, and that's what I was going to lead to, is that I've had more challenging with players about really crappy one hand and back-end staff, they never learned it right. And I try to teach them a two-hander because it's different enough that they can actually... But the constructive nature of the Two and a stroke after you have this free-flowing one-hander is very hard to get a player, but a two insert... My goodness, it's very easy to house be one had
0:50:37.0 Jack Broudy: Rights, I let my players do both, in fact, all my two-handers love to hit one enters like Woohoo, the DOT, he has a great two-hander before, if you just tell them to get a one hand or just clubs at gorgeous. When the thing is, it's still the same where I can line up the shot now, whether you have two hands on it and you ripple out for the kid, or whether you have one hand on it, can you Ripper or you decide to play left candidate, doesn't it really doesn't matter as long as they know what they're doing and have the fundamentals because... Yeah, that is a metros that feel comfortable teaching the two-hander, you're giving a player style that maybe you shouldn't even have a... To him...
0:51:22.1 Dave Smith: Well, I think the two-hander can be easily adapted and moulded to a one-hand when a player shows that compensate and I have several... The two twins, I taught well to having back out, the one of the identical twins started to really show me he loved... Because again, we picked that one hand in life, so he showed me that he liked it, I've had many, many top players show me that, and we're like, Yeah, that fits the narrative of a perfect one-handed back and let's stay with it. So there are obviously situations, but to take a one-hander who's been top wrong or one-hand who for whatever reason just can't hit it well to Hammond stroke is hard for them to feel because of the constructive nature of two hands versus the freedom of the one but the freedom of one hand of strokes is what makes those throats less consistent. If one had a strokes were more desirable overall, in all sports, then answer me this, why in the world do all the offers use two hands or you can see a a... Unless they're missing an art, but there's a reason because involved, we have a very small hitting the club face has a sweet spot that is about this big, and we have to be able to repeat that stroke on command and find that very small heads every time.
0:52:58.0 Dave Smith: Two hands, every player I teach the... We play... It comes to me usually is more consistent with what shot the two-handed back, and almost without exception, what shot is... They're more powerful shot. You either one, hinder what...
0:53:11.7 Jack Broudy: Because you have the whip factor, you have the risk, the free-flowing risk, you don't have the connectivity of both hand controlling the racer. So about three months ago, one of our first... When we first met, that was one of our first conversations on two hands on both sides, and you said... You're one of the only people I've seen, and I said, Well, you're one of the only people I've seen. I'm a big believer in two hands on both sides to learn the fundamental symmetry line up, you can't... You really can't hit the ball too wrong if you have two hands on it, because if you do, you're gonna go on the bottom of the net or you're gonna feel a handcuff, I love with you to make a contact.
0:53:50.2 Dave Smith: I love the repeated repeat of items of Monica Seles married Marco Pulver on of the two hand, which is a more convention to hander. Can you name a top male player right now who learned both. Both hands on both sides.
0:54:07.1 Jack Broudy: I'm guessing, I'm guessing Roger and all the... Did I'm guessing when they are young.
0:54:12.3 Dave Smith: They don't know me River, I do know roller to has the bullies. I'm sure Roger did. I don't know, I know pears learned with the two and in back
0:54:20.8 Jack Broudy: In, I played them, I was just singing a Yuki played Pete doubles when he was 15 and a half. And he played with a guy from USC, they beat us in three sets, and he has two-hander, and I remember saying to my dumbass, we thought we're gonna crush it, say on this kid, so we just figured it was appropriate and you wanna... This juniors out and we were calling... We were just out of college and we thought it was Milo like me and Oh, we thought we had these guys second round, no problem. He didn't miss a ball, his two header was money, people don't even know is... I'm serving the bias I kick were serving as big as we can to this little kid thinking will rattle up a little bit, this to hinder was so clean people, I don't think people have a verse repeated Sampras Tander, but it was perfect. And that he ends up with a one-hand, maybe you should have stuck with the tooth because people started picking on his one-hander in the end, Remember the icing on.
0:55:19.2 Dave Smith: And they said that he changed the one hand to win at a 16... A 16 a. And so that was the goal, and we can return the clock that can say What a trotting learned with 2 anabolic and ironically, we know that or right-handed player, play Left have that's right now, I would have that money that his two hands on both sides, probably promoted his left side so well that he suction my daughter's game, she hit her back in
0:55:51.8 Jack Broudy: With a hat, got time for another bit there too. What do you think... Let's go ahead into there because I've got a teen an hour, like I said, we could continue to do this, but there are a lot of myths in teaching tennis that I just shake my head, and I know a lot of you guys out there, I'm not... I know it's not just Dave, and I know you guys walk around your tennis club and you look at people teaching tennis and you shake your head, but... So it's not just us, but it's a great topic because I think that's one of the reasons the game isn't growing, is because these myths are being perpetrated...
0:56:30.2 Dave Smith: Right, and I think it's a big part of it. Well, I'll say this fogs, train your player as well, training to enjoy the sport, like you would trade a piano players who enjoy the instrument, they will be able to play music for the rest of their lives and they will enjoy the music, and my daughter played a tower several years, she comes home from when she was visiting, and first, she does and sits down and plays the count, not because we demand it, torches 23 years old because she loves to play.
0:57:01.2 Jack Broudy: Hey, you and I play music, right, Man, we can't wait to get together because listen, music is its own thing, but it's kind of like... I tell players, you know, there's nothing like hitting a good ball, there's just nothing like it...
0:57:14.3 Dave Smith: No, you're absolutely right, and there's nothing better than playing music if you play the instrument, well, let's be on the basis to a clan theater. You learn the instrument well, you enjoy it, you become passionate, and I only get this word, all of my students, I tell them the one thing that you're going to gain out of this is culture and passion, and music for you, music for me, tennis for you. To us, for me, as a passion, because we've learned it well, we love sharing that information, we like to give people as much information so they in turn are becoming more password, and if we can actually do what we are attempting to do... I guarantee the tennis port will grow both in the individual programs at which we do, and this is again my bad plan, and we will play it for life. I'm 63 years old. Got what.
0:58:06.8 Jack Broudy: I'm still doing a Toomey. Always wrap these things up so nicely, but I'm gonna go one more time because I really wanna say This lease, my wife last in me all the time, so... Yeah, you're right, I love my music. I love playing guitar and singing, and I love harmony, you know what, it all comes out, right. And everything's tight. You know what, I just like, I love tennis, but any time I come back, and my wife always last, I come back, I play guitar with a friend down the street, or even here in Denver, one of the first things I had to do was find someone like a jam with... So I play with him or I'll play with Anton tennis or back in San Diego, and I used to come in from surfing, I always say the same thing to my wife maybe, and maybe it's 'cause we're older now, but I always say the job. I needed that. Whether it's in, it doesn't matter if it's tennis, surfing, music, it really is, it enhances your life. And you don't even feel like yourself, if you don't play music for a couple of weeks, if you don't play tennis for a couple of weeks, you're like, Who am I so I really need it.
0:59:13.3 Jack Broudy: I really need to play a decent tennis game... A tennis every week, I really do, because it's part of who you are. It becomes part of who you are, and it's a reason for living... I guess I hate to be so dramatic, but I obsolete.
0:59:29.0 Dave Smith: We have a purpose when we're playing and playing tennis, and there's the sideburns, but I think college in Connell grip for him on, but a student... So I had long hair back then, you know what, I stadiums bigger than my bicep, if you look at that stupid picture, but
0:59:52.0 Jack Broudy: At four arms bigger than you... But
0:59:56.2 Dave Smith: You know what, you and I both continued to play tennis and promote tennis because we became good players, we know what it's like to enjoy the sport tennis, a Ellie to play music well, we know it's like to play golf well, and my daughter will be a golfer for the rest of her life. And she loves the sport. She loves tennis. My players, I'll leave you with one statement, I've got these little eighth grade girls that are gonna be my freshman players coming out this year, and we do the off-season workout after school, and I turned to the players, I said, Did you guys have fun today and they said, Coach, we look forward to Monday, Wednesday and Fridays every week. You know why? We get to play tennis, I'll tell you, that is my reward greater than any monetary reward, to know that I've instilled something that they look forward to because they know they're getting better and they're looking for not... Because it's hitting giggle. Yeah, we have a good time.
1:00:51.2 Jack Broudy: And I hear this from all my pros, I hear this Susan nardi, I hear this from him by air, I hear this from Dean, all these guys JC, they all say the same thing, they just love giving people his passion that will enhance their life for the rest in life, and it'll be something like I said to me, You're gonna have to work and you're on... Have to do a lot of things that you have to do, and this is something you get to do, it's a privilege. So
1:01:18.3 Dave Smith: I would say everybody, the smiles on my girls faces are pretty sincere smiles and again, yes, these girls behind me, 160 consecutive MAT team matches and were state champions, so I would say, yeah, they're pretty happy, but it's more about the journey year, the journey, folks.
1:01:41.4 Jack Broudy: Right great, well, thanks again, as I really enjoy our chats, whether they're being recorded or not, I enjoy our chats and we'll get together, and by the way, folks, we are gonna get together physically one of these days, and I think we'll probably let you all know about it 'cause maybe we'll do some live stuff, maybe we'll invite a few people.
1:02:01.6 Dave Smith: That will be a blast, so we're looking this summer, Locke, Your hairs on, eyes open for something jacked.
1:02:07.3 Jack Broudy: Go. Thanks Dave, I really enjoyed it. Have a great rest of your weekend and happy Mother's Day.
1:02:11.8 Dave Smith: Every Mother's Day. Thanks. Perfect.
